GUESS eyewear frames
The GUESS brand is the story of the 4 Marciano brothers: Georges, Maurice, Armand and Paul. Born in Morocco, the four brothers and their parents moved to France, successively to Paris and Marseille. From an early age, all four brothers were drawn to the world of fashion, and Georges proved it. At the age of 23, he worked as a hairdresser and, in his spare time, began designing ties. Thus began the siblings' business, with each one assigned a task. Paul handles customer relations and sales, Maurice production, and Arnaud accounting and shipping. Maurice and Georges create their first blouse. It featured a one-size-fits-all white blouse.
Over time, a variety of products were introduced, culminating in an experiment with denim (a cotton fabric). Their clientele quickly grew, and 26 seasonal stores opened in the south of France. Tempted by the American adventure, in 1981 the Marcianos set up their ready-to-wear business in California. At the time, the brand name was MGA.A. In 1982, the name was changed to GUESS. The name was decided during a stroll while reading a McDonald's poster with the word "guess" written on it.
The word is easy to remember and pronounce. It was unanimously adopted by the four brothers. The logo came later, with a triangle and a question mark created by Maurice. Spotting that jeans were out of fashion, the four brothers adapted American fabrics to European style. The designs are both timeless and sensual. Unfortunately, buyers were scarce. The brothers decided to offer faded, skin-tight, embellished jeans with hand-sewn patterns, and then created the three-zip jean. Bloomingdale's (an American department store chain) came to their rescue, agreeing to sell two dozen pieces. With perseverance, the market took off to the point where the Marilyn jeans were sold out in a matter of hours.
The GUESS label finally took off. Following this event, the four brothers decided to invest in their first store. Their designs for dungarees, double denim and zippers replaced by buttons were a real success. After women's and then men's ready-to-wear, GUESS began offering perfumes and accessories, including eyewear.
Today, GUESS is a global brand. The label is present in around 80 countries and has almost 800 clothing boutiques.
