Ralph Lifschitz, who later took the name Ralph Lauren, was born in 1939 in the Bronx, New York. The name change was prompted by his Russian-born father, a house painter. He felt that Ralph created a more bourgeois image.
Ralph begins by working at Brooks Brother's, where he sells gloves, then at Rivetz, a tie manufacturer. In his spare time, he takes evening business courses at City College. With a $50,000 loan from Norman Hilton (head of the "Ivy League" clothing brand), Ralph Lauren opened a tie store in 1967 and sold his own POLO brand. The following year, he introduced a range of suits and shirts.
Ralph Lauren's rise to prominence began in the 1970s with the film "Gaspy the Magnificent", for which he was commissioned to make bespoke suits.
In 1971, Ralph Lauren created his logo depicting a polo player on a horse.
The following year, in 1972, he designed his famous Polo shirt, which he released in 24 colors, as well as a collection of shoes and womenswear.
In the 1980s, Ralph Lauren moved into furniture. He was the first American designer to create a complete collection dedicated to the home, offering exceptional style and quality.
During these same years, Ralph Lauren relocated his manufacturing to Hong Kong, where he opened a factory. In 1990, realizing that Americans were increasingly interested in fitness and health, he created his Polo Sport line. In 1994, the company expanded its range by introducing the Purple Label brand and Polo Jeans, with its low-cost concept.
Finally, in 2012, he produced the US Olympic team uniform, and for several years now, Ralph Lauren has added the sale of glamorous and chic sunglasses and eyewear.
