Their success soon spread around the world. In 1971, after the group split up, John Lennon devoted himself entirely to his solo career. He was inspired by his wife, the Japanese artist Yoko Ono. That same year, he composed his most iconic hit, Imagine. He retired from public life in 1975 to look after his son Sean. In 1980, a few weeks before he was murdered in front of his home on December 8, he had resumed his career. Slightly short-sighted and wearing his round glasses, John Lennon was instantly recognizable.
