The Carven heritage: a journey through haute couture and innovation

Founded in 1945, Maison Carven was created by Carmen de Tommaso, known as Marie-Louise Carven. This French brand of women's ready-to-wear enjoyed the "Haute Couture" appellation until 1996. Marie-Louise Carven presented her first collection with a white and green striped cotton summer dress called "Ma Griffe". It quickly became a worldwide success. Until her departure in 1993, Marie-Louise Carven differentiated herself from other haute couture designers by her use of different textiles: gingham cotton, Indonesian batik, African wax and various exotic fabrics she brought back from her travels. She also worked with English embroidery.

In 1946, Maison Carven launched its perfumes, initiated by Georges Baud. The first fragrance marketed bore the same name as the first collection of "Ma Griffe" dresses. Its packaging, with its green and white colors, recalls the eponymous dress. A few years after its launch, "Ma Griffe" was the first fragrance to be sold on airplanes. From the 1950s onwards, as in many haute couture houses, ready-to-wear became the norm, and Carven developed a line of swimwear, children's clothing, scarves... From the outset, the Maison Carven paid particular attention to every detail, from the choice of materials to the structure of the cuts, a requirement that we see today in the design of its eyewear.

In 2017, Serge Ruffieux was appointed artistic director of Maison Carven. He unveiled his first collection during "Paris Fashion Week Spring Summer 2018" and added women's lines with shoes and accessories.
