Carven’s Legacy: A Journey Through Haute Couture and Innovation

Founded in 1945, the House of Carven was created by Carmen de Tommaso, known as Marie-Louise Carven. This French brand, now specializing in women’s ready-to-wear, held the “Haute Couture” designation until 1996. Marie-Louise Carven presented her first collection with a summer dress made of cotton, featuring white and green stripes, called “Ma Griffe.” It quickly became a global success. Until her departure in 1993, Marie-Louise Carven distinguished herself from other haute couture designers through her use of various textiles: Vichy cotton, Indonesian batik, African wax print, and various exotic fabrics she brought back from her travels. Elle also worked with English embroidery.

As early as 1946, the House of Carven launched its line of perfumes, developed by Georges Baud. The first perfume released bore the same name as the first “Ma Griffe” dress collection. Its packaging, featuring green and white colors, echoed the eponymous dress. A few years after its launch, “Ma Griffe” became the first perfume to be sold on airplanes. Starting in the 1950s, as was the case with many haute couture houses, ready-to-wear gained prominence, and Carven developed a line of swimwear, children’s clothing, scarves, and more… From its very beginnings, the House of Carven has paid particular attention to every detail, whether in the choice of materials or the structure of the cuts—a commitment that is reflected today in the design of its eyeglasses.

In 2017, Serge Ruffieux was appointed creative director of Carven. He unveiled his first collection during Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018 and expanded the women’s lines to include shoes and accessories.
