The Chloé story: from visionary beginnings to an iconic luxury brand

Originally from Alexandria, Egypt, Gabriella Honaka moved to Paris in 1945 with her husband, Raymond Aghion. As early as 1952, Gabriella wanted to change fashion by eliminating its stiffness and coldness. She recruited a seamstress with haute couture experience, but chose the fabrics herself, favoring soft, fine materials to revolutionize fashion. Her aim was to create luxury ready-to-wear with delicate, refined materials, following in the footsteps of the Gaby Aghion designers of the time, who wanted to shake up the codes of traditional fashion. In 1956, Gaby and her partner Jacques Lenoir presented their first collection at the Café de Flore. The café was frequented by artists, philosophers and literary figures, who discovered these young talents. The brand was thus launched.

As success grew, the designer surrounded herself with young stylists who created elegant ready-to-wear. In 1965, Karl Lagerfeld became Chloé's principal designer.
