The House of Burberry was founded in Basingstoke in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, aged just 21. His aim was to create warm clothing that would withstand the whims of the British climate. He invented the famous gabardine, made from a weather-resistant fabric, particularly resistant to rain. It was patented in 1888.

The Burberry brand: from gabardine to luxury eyewear

The first person to don the Burberry gabardine was Dr. Fridtjof Nansen in 1893, (Norwegian polar explorer and zoologist) while working in the Arctic Circle. Others also wore it, including Brigadier General Edward Maitland on a balloon trip to the Crystal Palace in Russia, a distance of 1,800 kilometers and a duration of 31 hours 30 minutes.

The trench coat and the origins of Burberry

After gabardine, Thomas Burberry created the Tielocken coat, featuring a buckle fastening, a strap and a single button at the collar. It was patented in 1912. During the First World War, Thomas Burberry invents the Burberry men's trench coat. It featured D-shaped loops to hold grenades, epaulets to hang military equipment, a storm flap to allow water to drain easily, and a revolver flap to protect men on the front.

After his death in 1926, his two sons took over the family business. They continued their father's ascent with the Burberry check pattern. This trademark is used as a lining for rainwear.

In 1955, Queen Elizabeth II granted Burberry a Royal Warrant for its weather-resistant fabric. In 1990, the Prince of Wales again granted the company a Royal Warrant as an outfitter.

In 2010, Burberry broadcasts a live fashion show for the first time.

The evolution of the Burberry brand

In 2014, there are over 500 Burberry stores worldwide. In 2016, the brand was recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index as a leader in the "apparel, textiles and luxury goods" sector. Burberry now offers clothing for men, women, children and babies.
