The Marc Jacobs brand was created by Robert Duffy, an American businessman, and Marc Jacobs, an American fashion designer. Raised by his paternal grandmother, Marc Jacobs learned knitting and sewing at her side. After studying at the High School of Art and Design, Marc Jacobs continued his studies at Parson's Chool of Design, where he was awarded the Distinguished Student Award. It was during this period that he met Robert Duffy and launched his label. They presented their first collection in 1986, and in 1987, Marc Jacobs won the "Perry Ellis Award for New Young Talent" from the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America).

In 1989, Marc Jacobs took control of women's ready-to-wear for Perry Ellis (American sportswear designer), for which he won the CFDA Women's Ready-to-Wear Designer Award. In 1997, he became Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton. Marc Jacobs successively opened his first boutique on Mercer Street in New York, and created a younger line under the name "Marc by Marc Jacobs". Finally, accessories appeared: perfumes, swimwear, children's collections, men's collections and goodies. Marc Jacobs boutiques sprang up all over the world: Europe, Asia, France, Chicago... Since 2013, Marc Jacobs has devoted himself solely to his eponymous brand.
