The PAUL AND JOE brand was created by the talented Sophie Albou-Méchaly, a Paris-born designer. While her parents were founding the shirt brand Le Garage in the 1980s, the young girl, only 13 years old at the time, was still in school. After earning her high school diploma, elle studied business administration at the Sorbonne, then at the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM). Sophie Méchaly began her professional career in 1983 with the renowned Franco-Tunisian fashion designer and couturier Azzedine Alaïa; she then worked with her parents but very quickly decided she wanted to create her own brand.

Sophie Méchaly then embarked on this adventure and founded her company under the names of her two sons: Paul and Joe. Wanting to stand out from the prevailing fashion trends of the time—which tended toward dark colors—she offered her customers a colorful, fun, dynamic, and youthful style. Sophie Méchaly has since created a second brand called Paul And Joe Sister. This line is designed for young women who want a casual yet chic look. In 2009, the designer entered the eyewear industry. Today, all PAUL AND JOE products are sold and recognized worldwide in various boutiques and retail locations.
