To prevent their eyes from getting burned by the sun’s glare off the snow, the Inuit developed the first known sunglasses—over 800 years ago.

To cope with the harsh conditions of the Arctic, they devised masks made of ivory, bone, wood, and leather. A narrow slit for the eyes allowed them to see enough to navigate without being blinded by the surrounding light.

During the Roman Empire, Nero, too, watched gladiatorial combats on the white sand of the arenas while shielding his eyes with a thin slice of emerald. Because the images were distorted, the emperor found the spectacle far more entertaining.

In the 12th century, Chinese judges concealed their gaze behind sunglasses to hide their facial expressions in court while questioning a witness. They used flat, tinted quartz lenses to protect themselves from being blinded by the sun’s rays.

Between the 15th and 18th centuries, Italians took sunglasses to a whole new level by inventing lenses that corrected vision. The lenses were tinted blue or green, which created strong contrasts and helped people with visual impairments. Sunglasses were often prescribed to people suffering from syphilis, due to one of the most common symptoms of this terrible disease: hypersensitivity to light.

In 1752, the Englishman James Ayscough discovered how to filter UV rays. He is often considered the inventor of sunglasses.

A Brief History of Sunglasses

In 1929, Sam Foster began marketing the first sunglasses in the U.S.; the “Foster Grant” was launched and quickly became a huge success. The success was such that, in 1937, the U.S. military asked Bausch & Lomb to manufacture sunglasses for its pilots to protect them from the sun’s rays during flight, thanks to a major innovation: the polarizing filter.
