Signs of astigmatism

Astigmatism, caused by a deformation of the surface of the eye (cornea), is a vision defect affecting almost 15% of the French population. Astigmatism can lead to headaches and visual fatigue, and needs to be treated with corrective lenses to compensate for this visual imbalance.

Generally speaking, the curvature of the cornea is rounded; for the astigmatic, this curvature is more oval than normal, resulting in imperfect vision both near and far. Perceived images are distorted and blurred.

Astigmatism can also make it difficult to distinguish between characters that look alike: "0" and "8", "m" and "n", or "p" and "f". Contrasts and lines, whether horizontal, vertical or oblique, are not clearly perceived, impairing vision.
