Reimbursement by French national health insurance
In France, French national health insurance reimburses your medical expenses up to various ceilings, in full or in part, based on a medical prescription less than 3 years old for prescription eyewear. Useful information:
- - Is your child under 6? If your child's correction changes, you can be reimbursed for one or more frames per year.
- - Is your child between 6 and 18? You can claim reimbursement for one pair of prescription glasses per year (frame + lenses). Based on a price of €0.05, French national health insurance covers 60% of the frames. Lenses are reimbursed at 60%, based on a rate of 0.05€.
- - Are you over 18? Your prescription glasses are reimbursed at 60%, based on a flat rate of 0.05€. Lenses are reimbursed at 60% on the basis of rates that vary from 0.05€ according to the degree of correction.

Example: I'm over 18. If I buy a pair of prescription glasses with a frame costing €100 and a unifocal (low-correction) lens costing €49, the total amount I have to pay is €198. French national health insurance will reimburse €0.03 for the frame and €0.03 per lens, for a total of €0.09. In the absence of supplementary health insurance providers, I will have to pay 197.91€ out of pocket.
