Protect your eyes during physical activity

Whatever your sport, it's important to take care of your eyes.

In the mountains

In the mountains, it's essential to wear appropriate sunglasses (category 3 or 4 with polarized lenses to reduce stray reflections). Nearly 85% of light rays are reflected off snow. The higher you climb, the more ultraviolet rays you receive. For example, when you climb 1000 metres, you get 10% more UV.

At sea

At sea, sunglasses are also highly recommended, if not mandatory. Like snow, water reflects sunlight, which can cause glare. Sand and sea reflect 20% and 10% of the sun's UV rays respectively. Category 3 or 4 anti-reflective or polarizing lenses are strongly recommended.

At the pool

If you wear contact lenses at the pool, it is strictly forbidden to leave them in. Swimming pool water contains numerous chemicals, notably bleach, whose purpose is to disinfect the water and prevent bacterial proliferation. Pool water is also soft, unlike the salty environment around your eyes. If it penetrates below the lens, it can lead to amoebic keratitis. It is therefore detrimental to the quality of your lenses. There is, however, a solution: swimming-pool glasses adapted to your eyesight. These are no longer just for professionals. For more information, ask your optician for advice.

For ball sports and indoor sports (dance, volleyball, basketball...), we recommend contact lenses rather than prescription glasses. However, there are also shock-resistant sports eyeglasses made from tougher materials, such as polycarbonate, that will suit your activities and expectations.
