Before buying a pair of sunglasses or eyeglasses, it's important to ask yourself one question: what will this frame be used for? In what situation(s) will I need to wear it?

In terms of spectacle lenses, there are two main families: organic lenses and mineral lenses. These two types of lenses correspond to very different uses, with their own advantages and disadvantages. Find out below which lens is best suited to your situation and needs.

Mineral lenses

Mineral lenses, also known as " natural lenses ", are made from sand and various chemical elements. Long used in the eyewear industry, they are highly resistant to projections of sand or sparks, and do not react to chemical aggression, which is very common in certain professions.

Mineral lenses are very hard, let up to 90% of light rays through and are not easily scratched. However, because mineral lenses are made of glass, they are not very resistant to impact and break more easily. In fact, they are forbidden for children under 16.

Organic lenses

Plastic lenses account for over 90% of all lenses sold in France. There are several different types: CR39, MR8, Trivex, polycarbonate, etc.

Theycan be used on all types of frames, whether sunglasses or optics, round or rectangular, acetate or metal, and are lighter than mineral lenses, making them more comfortable to wear. Responding to technological developments in society, organic lenses are more impact-resistant, stronger and therefore more reliable.

What's more, organic lenses can be tinted in a wide range of colors, without difficulty. In general, these lenses are ideal for children's and sports glasses.

However, organic lenses are less resistant to scratches than mineral lenses. However, there are various anti-scratch coatings available to limit this negative effect. To clean organic lenses, we recommend the use of microfiber cloths and suitable products.
