Sunglasses aren't just a fashion accessory. Today, sunglasses have become a necessity, as the sun's harmful rays attack us more and more relentlessly. At Mymonture, renowned brands such as Ray-ban, Julbo, Maui Jim, Tom Ford, Celine, Prada, Tag heuer and many others present their sunglasses ranges, ready to make you look your best. it's up to you to choose the style that will give you the look of your dreams.

Leading high-fashion brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren and many others have anticipated the future and the need for sun protection, cornering the market and giving sunglasses a style and class all their own.

If you want to look cool, wear sunglasses as soon as the sun rises. In addition to being fashionable, your sunglasses will protect you from UV rays. Here's their history and how these useful little objects have become a fashion accessory in their own right, in just a few hundred years.

To avoid burning their eyes from the sun's reflection off the snow, the Inuit developed the first known sunglasses, over 800 years ago.

To cope with the harsh conditions of the Arctic, they devised masks made of ivory, bone, wood and leather. A thin slit for the eyes enabled them to see enough to navigate without being dazzled by the ambient light.

During the Roman Empire, Nero, too, watched gladiatorial combat on the white sands of the arena, shielding his eyes with a thin emerald blade. As the images were distorted, the emperor was much more entertained.

In the 12th century, Chinese judges hid their eyes behind sunglasses to conceal their facial expressions in court when questioning a witness. They used smoked flat quartz lenses to protect their eyes from being blinded by the sun's rays.

Between the 15th and 18th centuries, the Italians took sunglasses to a new level, inventing sight-correcting lenses. The lenses were tinted blue or green, creating strong contrasts and helping the visually impaired. Sunglasses were often prescribed to syphilis sufferers, due to one of the most common symptoms of this terrible disease: hypersensitivity to light.

In 1752, the Englishman James Ayscough discovered how to filter UV rays. He is often considered to be the creator of sunglasses.

A brief history of sunglasses

In 1929, Sam Foster launched the first sunglasses in the U.S.A., the "Foster Grant".such was their success that in 1937, the U.S. Army asked Bausch & Lomb to manufacture sunglasses for its pilots to protect them from the sun's rays during flight, thanks to a major innovation: the polarizing filter.

The Aviator sunglasses and the Ray-ban brand were a worldwide triumph, and still are today almost 80 years later. at the end of the Second World War, in the years 1939 / 1945, American army soldiers introduced Ray-ban frames to European soil. In 1950, sunglasses began to diversify in shape. Gone were the small, round metal glasses with no consistency, and manufacturers were inspired.

The iconic butterfly-wing frame, the oval frame, the rectangular frame, the round frame revised to make it contemporary, the wrap-around mask frame, the Aviator, the Wayfarer, the Clubmaster - all these frames made the name of the great sunglass brands. They were worn by actors and TV stars alike, and even today, these iconic frames find their place on the best catwalks of famous fashion designers.

Sunglasses: a never-ending evolution

Over time, sunglasses have improved. In the early days, tinting the lenses green, blue or gray seemed important. To make them more comfortable to wear and facilitate the installation of increasingly effective filters, glass was replaced by mineral material. Today, polycarbonate is mainly used. Much stronger and lighter, it can be treated with a wide range of treatments and easily adapted to your eyesight. UV filtration has become truly 100% effective.

Polarized lenses open your eyes to a whole new world, as imperfections disappear and you admire landscapes in all their purity and splendor. Thanks to polarization, colors and contrasts are optimized, giving you a prodigious visual perspective. Frames are progressing too. The frames of your sunglasses have undergone serious transformations and invaluable refinements over the years. While in the 1920s, sunglasses were really only used to protect you from the sun's harmful rays, in the 21st century they have become a fashion accessory in their own right.designers have brought them up to date with the latest materials and technologies.

Today, sunglasses are aimed at the general public. Each and every one of us can choose a frame to suit our activities and needs, and discover the style that suits you, your face and your look. We all have a pair of sunglasses in our wardrobe. From the proper pair of sunglasses to the most eccentric or the most classic pair to the most modern, this accessory has become indispensable for us to project ourselves into the fashion world, but above all to avoid serious problems for our fragile eyes. The technical innovations of talented designer Philippe Starck's Biolink range of sunglasses, with their titanium Flex frames and unbreakable, foldable temples, bring you the very best.
