The eyes are highly sensitive to the sun's rays. A quick reminder: the front of the eye is made up of the iris and the cornea. The cornea absorbs part of the UV rays and protects the particularly sensitive crystalline lens, even though it also absorbs a large proportion of the UV rays. However, the more the eyes are exposed to the sun, the more the crystalline lens ages, loses its transparency and becomes more opaque over time. Finally, at the back of the eye lies the retina, a tissue that is highly sensitive to U.V. All this explains why too much exposure to the sun can lead to keratitis (inflammation of the cornea), ophthalmia (intense burning) and cataracts.
