Top-brand ski masks and helmets
Whether you ski regularly or just once or twice a year, good protection for your head and eyes is essential.
For your safety and comfort, MyMonture has selected several leading brands offering products specially designed for various sporting activities, including skiing.
The Julbo brand owes its name to Jules Baud, an eyeglasses manufacturer since 1888. A native of Morez in the high mountains, Jules Baud wasted no time in designing his first "cristallier" goggles for people wishing to protect their eyes in the mountains.
The French brand Cairn was created following a Franco-Swiss expedition to Nepal to face the Dhaulagiri, the country's highest mountain. Cairn was born in 1994, with the aim of ensuring eye protection and performance for all those involved in mountain sports.
Frenchman Gilles Demetz was both a passionate scuba diver and a professional optician. After creating his own brand and finding a solution for divers to see underwater, in 1966 he began manufacturing goggles and masks for mountain and board sports.
The French Vuarnet brand was created in 1960 by optician Roger Puilloux and Olympic ski champion Jean Vuarnet. today, Vuarnet is a partner of the French Ski Federation. The brand equips France's greatest champions as well as the general public with ski goggles, helmets and masks.
Superdry is an English ready-to-wear brand that has developed a range of technical clothing for winter sports and a very comfortable and stylish range of ski goggles for the best conditions on the slopes.
How to choose the right ski mask?
Ski masks have become indispensable whatever the weather: snowstorms, gray skies or fine weather. They protect your head in all circumstances! You can choose between different types of screen. Each has its own characteristics.
The category 1 screen is reserved for bad weather and low light conditions. It is generally pink, yellow or orange in color.
Category 2 goggles allow you to ski in all weathers, but are mainly worn when the sun is barely visible. The screen is brown or brownish in color.
The category 3 screen protects you in sunny weather. The dark gray or pearly tint of the screen protects your eyes from glare.
The category 4 screen is indispensable in strong sunlight at high altitudes. You can select other features for your ski mask lenses.
The photochromic screen adapts to the brightness encountered by the skier.
The spherical screen adapts to the shape of the retina, and the mask is flatter than other models.
The cylindrical screen has more rounded lenses and an optimal viewing angle, offering a wider field of vision.
You can also opt for a single-screen mask with anti-fog treatment. Fog on the inside of the lens disappears immediately, without the need for wiping.
The double-screen mask permanently prevents fogging thanks to the air pocket between the two screens. The mechanically ventilated mask is battery-powered. Moisture is expelled from the screen. The adjustable aeration mask lets you adjust the amount of air circulating. With the fixed-opening mask, humidity is completely prevented.
Finally, you can choose between several foam thicknesses. The triple-density mask has three layers of foam, is very comfortable and provides optimum insulation. A two-layer goggle is comfortable but less effective, while a single-layer goggle offers insufficient protection.
How to choose the right ski helmet?
To choose the right ski helmet, you need to consider 4 criteria: your size, helmet ventilation (the more ventilation holes you have, the better), lightness (for an adult, the lightest weight is between 360 grams and 450 grams) and the visor, which is highly recommended for spectacle wearers for added comfort. Without a visor, ski goggles are strongly recommended.
