When it comes to sports glasses, it's hard not to think of Oakley. Indeed, this brand has established itself as the obvious choice when it comes to technical materials and intensive sports activities. Today, Mymonture tells you the story of the Oakley brand.

The origins of the Oakley brand

Oakley was created in 1975 by Jim JANNARD, but where does the name "Oakley" come from? It's actually the name of his dog, who used to lie down at the foot of an oak tree, which literally means "Oak-Ley".

Originally, however, the Oakley brand had no connection with the world ofoptics and eyewear, and for good reason. Jim Jannard began by manufacturing handlebar grips for motorcycles using a new material called "unobtainium".

It wasn't until 1984 that the brand decided to branch out into eyewear, when its creator discovered that the innovative material he used for motorcycle handlebars could also be used to create eyewear. It was then that the brand became synonymous with innovation, technology and performance. The first pair of glasses he created was called " O-Frame ", with a cylindrical lens that would later become the brand's logo. This frame was designed primarily for motorcycling (although the brand remains attached to this sport, having made handlebars in the past).

As the brand became more and more talked-about, sportsmen and women began to take an interest in it, including one cyclist: Greg Lemond, who became the brand's representative and climbed to the top of the Tour de France podium three times in 1986, 1989 and 1990. At the time, Lemond wore Eyeshades frames, based on the lighter, higher-performance O-frames.

Oakley and the general public

Originally reserved for sports enthusiasts, the Oakley brand decided to diversify and open up to the general public by offering sunglasses and prescription eyewear, while retaining its style and philosophy. Since the 90's, a number of no less iconic models have been launched, such as :
