July marks the start of vacation for our children. And when we say vacations, we of course mean sun, beach, walks, swimming, outdoor games... However, when we say vacations and sun, we also mean protection. Just as essential as protecting the skin is protecting your child's eyes (as well as your own!). Mymonture tells you all about it here.
Why should your child wear sunglasses?
Children are more sensitive to the sun's rays than adults. Firstly, because the crystalline lens is not fully formed before the age of 12, it is more permeable to UV rays. In addition, a child's pupil is larger than that of an adult. Finally, children are less sensitive to glare and pain, so they blink less. Without realizing it, they are more exposed to UV rays.
Sunglasses are therefore an absolute must as soon as a child sets foot outside, even if he's wearing a hat or sheltered under an umbrella. The first sunglasses can be worn as soon as the child is sitting up, at around 6 to 8 months.
Which glasses to choose?
- - Choice of lenses: When choosing sunglasses for your child, make sure they are CE marked, either on the lens or in the instructions. This means that the lenses comply with European standards. As for the index, choose an index 3 for the sea and mountains, and an index 4 when you're on the high seas or at altitude.
- - Choice of frame: For young children, it's best to choose round frames without angles, as they cover the visual field better. On the other hand, it's best to choose wraparound shapes that hug the eyebrow, so that children can't look up.
In any case, if your children are to accept wearing glasses, they need to be comfortable and unobtrusive. They also need to be durable. Silicone frames are best for the nose and ears. Don't hesitate to choose glasses with them, in colors and shapes they like, so they'll be happy to wear them.
Beware of gadget sunglasses
Even though they've been banned, there are still some on the market. These glasses don't filter UVS rays very well. And this has a perverse effect. The pupil opens as it gets darker because the lenses are tinted. UV penetration is therefore greater.
To avoid buying gimmicky eyewear, make sure the CE mark is on the lens or in the instructions for use. To make sure you're on the right track, turn to a professional online optician like Mymonture.
